What MSPs want from a tier 2 tech recruitment supplier and why so few agencies deliver it

A strong supplier relationship takes time to build and very little to break. It requires patience, for both the supplier and the company, to create a long lasting and effective relationship. However, it is very rare that an organisation hiring tech contractors at volume has the time to wait for a strong relationship to develop. Here is what makes that relationship work, and work quickly.

What does a strong MSP supplier relationship look like?

A structured account management regime, with everything funnelled through one point of contact and an established, specialised team sitting behind that account manager to ensure everything is delivered effectively. A scattered relationship across multiple contacts creates duplicated communication and slower decisions. One accountable point of contact, backed by a specialised team, means issues get resolved without the MSP having to chase down different people for different answers.

Why does compliance matter so much to an MSP?

Because it removes repeated explanation. An MSP wants an agency with a strong compliance set-up, ensuring contractors have reliable references, are tax efficient and have the right insurances in place. They want an agency that understands the contracting market and how to manage contracts and payroll systems, without needing it explained over and over again.

Why do specialist tech recruiters matter more than generalists at volume?

Because MSP needs are often urgent, and a lot of the time an MSP needs people in seats yesterday. Real success in an agency and MSP relationship comes down to a specialist recruiter’s ability to go directly to their market and network, and have a pipeline of suitable, reliable candidates ready to go.

What does the onboarding process look like when an agency genuinely understands MSP structures?

Seamless. The MSP explains their process once, and the agency creates a process document for onboarding. From there, the only thing the MSP needs to manage is the offer going out in a timely manner. Once accepted, the agency manages everything in the background: compliance, background checks, contractor set-up, insurance and tax checks, and onsite directions for day one, without the MSP needing to worry.

What is the single biggest difference between an agency that fits an MSP process and one that fights it?

How quickly the account manager picks up the MSP’s process and understands its do’s and don’ts, which makes life easier for the internal recruiter or the MSP’s recruitment manager. The goal of a good agency is to lift the weight off the MSP’s shoulders entirely: know the process, procedures, candidate profile and cultural fit the client requires, stick within those parameters, and give clear, concise feedback at every stage. A good agency understands that the MSP’s recruitment manager has a hundred other things going on outside this relationship, and focuses on making their life easier. In simple terms: follow the process, provide talent in a timely manner, represent the brand well in the market, and take the headache away.

Frequent FAQ's for MSPs

What are the non-negotiables an MSP should have before adding a new agency to their list?

A strong compliance back office, a good reputation in the market, and specialist recruiters in the relevant technical areas.

What are IT Search’s standard SLAs?

IT Search’s standard turnaround is a 24 hour CV turnaround and a 2 week turnaround from brief to placement.

What should an MSP expect from an agency beyond candidates?

Advice that goes beyond day rates, including market insight and competitor information when it is needed.

Why does brand reputation matter to an MSP?

Because the agency is an extension of the MSP’s own brand, so having a reputable agency that delivers a strong candidate experience reflects directly on the MSP it represents.
