Business Modelling Consultancy- an advantageous career booster

So, you’ve built up your data skills, learned the ropes and have a desire to “move your career along”. You’ve worked those early years in an FS house or start up or have held your grip tightly on the lower rungs of the Big 4 ladder & think it may be time to find a brand that’s a little more ‘you’. Perhaps you’ve managed people and have built a reliable reputation as the ‘smartest in the room’ however have gotten stuck in the middle of a project that’s going nowhere fast (and it’s not your fault). If you’ve done the time, built the models and want to focus on commercial impact & utilisation of your data skills across a variety of challenges simultaneously, then a career in business modelling consultancy might just be the route to advancing your journey – fast.

A combination of data modelling, model & data verification – to ensure that clients can keep on keeping on…!

What is a Business Modelling Consultant?

  • To put it bluntly – this is bold face of decision science- utilising data techniques to assist businesses in making decisions with effective modelling at the core. As a Business Modelling Consultant you are an advisor working conscientiously across clients through the development of customised models, commissioned analysis, financial model assurance and remediation assurance to assist them in addressing internal decisions, external stakeholder requirements or regulatory matters. Ultimately you’ll work on a range of unique projects and in doing so – quickly expose yourself to complex and often intricate challenges – the executive edge that will add to your professional profile.

What skills do you need to have?

  • Consultants, by nature need to bring high calibre capabilities and a steadfast, solution orientated approach. You’ll likely come from Data Science, Analytics, Stats, Maths or Computer Science and have built confidence in your quantitative analytical arsenal and proven experience in practical data modelling in SAS, Python, VBA or C++. Data visualization is critical in this area – not only from a delivery perspective but also from a client management perspective; communicating progress & illustrating the fruits of your labour (and why your fees are worthwhile).

So – what are the nuts and bolts?

  • Business modelling consultants aren’t glorified data analysts – a common misconception. You’ll need to combine knowledge with analytics capabilities – marry the two & strive for results for your clients. Financial forecasting and robust business modelling as well as pricing and system calculations will be your everyday, however no two days will be the same! Your investment banking client may need works completed late in the day – so from time to time you’ll put your client ahead of your evening plans – to get the job done – rewarded of course with a healthy bonus.

And will this career avenue really boost my career?

  • The answer is yes. Talk to the top Chief Data Officers or Chief Analytic Officers. Speak with senior partners in the world of consulting or consultants turned data entrepreneurs in residence; they’ll all say that they never once regretted spending time in consulting. You’ll learn a lot – fast. You’ll gain access to senior people and complex business matters and you will take ownership as the independent voice of reason and accuracy in the room- i.e. you’re going to take on major responsibility. Velocity, complexity and precision are three themes commonly associated with contemporary consulting – however in the world of data analytics – this is simply ‘the way of your work’. If you’re motivated to do more than solve repetitive problems and want to drive pockets of change in exceptionally data driven environments – a career in Business Modelling Consultancy – may be for you.

To be successful however you’re going to have to bring something that can’t be trained or replicated; something closely linked to the very reason why you might consider a change in career direction at all. And that, dear reader – is your personality.
